Get Your Documents Authenticated for Saudi Arabia
Moving to Saudi Arabia for work, study or business? Your educational certificates, personal documents and professional credentials issued outside Saudi Arabia need to be authenticated before local authorities and employers will accept them.
Guideline Group helps you understand which documents require attestation, guides you through the Saudi Arabia authentication process, and assists with applications to the relevant government authorities and the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Do You Need Attestation for Saudi Arabia?
If your documents were issued outside Saudi Arabia, you will likely need attestation or authentication before using them in Saudi Arabia. This is especially important for employment, residence permits, business registration, professional licensing and educational applications.
Both attestation and apostille are available in Saudi Arabia. The right authentication method depends on the document type, where it was issued, and what you plan to use it for. Guideline Group helps clarify which route applies to your specific documents.
Apostille
A single official certification that verifies a document is genuine.
Full attestation
Verification by multiple government departments and the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Which Documents Require Attestation?
Educational Certificates
Degrees, diplomas, course completion certificates and transcripts from international universities. Documents issued in India often require authentication by the HRD (Higher Education Department) before use in Saudi Arabia.
Personal Documents
Marriage certificates, birth certificates and family relation certificates needed for residence permits, family visas and employment. These may require attestation by the government department that issued them.
Commercial and Business Documents
Trade licenses, partnership agreements, company registration certificates and business authorization documents used for foreign investment or branch registration in Saudi Arabia.
Professional Credentials
Healthcare licenses, nursing registrations, professional qualifications and credentials used to work in Saudi Arabia. Professional bodies or licensing authorities handle authentication for these documents.
Saudi Arabia Attestation Routes
Saudi Arabia offers two main authentication paths. The right choice depends on your document type and origin.
Apostille (For Hague Convention Documents)
Apostille is a simpler, faster alternative available in Saudi Arabia. It is a single official certification that verifies a document is genuine. Apostille works for documents from countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention, and processing is typically faster than full attestation.
Not all documents qualify for apostille. Some may require the full attestation route instead. See our Apostille Services page to learn more about this alternative.
Full Attestation Route (Notary, Government, MEA, MOFA)
The full attestation process involves verification by multiple government departments and the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The route typically follows these steps:
Step 1: Notary Certification
A local notary verifies your document is a true copy of the original.
Step 2: Government Department Attestation
The government department in the issuing country that has records of the original document confirms its authenticity. This might be an education ministry, commerce ministry, police department or professional licensing board, depending on the document type.
Step 3: MEA Authentication (for Indian Documents)
If your document is issued in India, the Ministry of External Affairs verifies it and prepares it for international use. Documents from other countries may skip this step.
Step 4: Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Legalisation
The Saudi MOFA completes the final authentication step, confirming the document is genuine and can be legally used in Saudi Arabia.
Not all documents follow all four steps. Some documents may not require MEA authentication, and some may qualify for apostille instead. Guideline Group helps you understand which route applies to your documents. For a detailed walkthrough of each stage, read our Saudi Certificate Attestation Guide.
What Documents You'll Need to Provide
The exact list depends on your document type and where it was issued. Common items include:
Your identification and contact details
The original document to be attested and a certified copy
Authorization documents if a representative is applying on your behalf
Any supporting documents specific to the document type
Translated versions if your documents are in a language other than English or Arabic
Ask for a case-specific document checklist before arranging authentication or translation. Requirements vary, and having the right documents ready speeds up the process.
